Oct 21, 2018 My kid has a 1911 based on an Essex frame my buddy bought at the factory back in the early 90's. Its serial number is in the 4700 range. 'If the rule you followed brought you to this.
NOTE: This listing previously noted a mechanical issue with the trigger. This issue was found to be caused by the magazine and a substitute magazine has been supplied instead. The issue with the trigger no longer occurs.

Our Assessment: Built on an Essex Arms frame, an Ithaca slide and with a Colt barrel, this pistol was likely either a restoration of an old Ithaca or it was a gun assembled from available parts. It certainly looks like a 1911, though! In order to take care of the current demand for.45 cal pistols, the Essex Arms Corp. Of Island Pond, Vt. Produced a number of 1911A1 frames. The frame is marked on the right hand side ESSEX ARMS CORP, below that ISLAND POND. And the serial number below that. I have an Essex Arms Corp. From what I've read its mainly for Parts or a throw together sidearm. I REALLY would love to hold onto it and spruce it up to a decent shooting firearm since it is my first 1911 passed on to me.
Barrel Length: 5”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a short serrated blade fixed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is a square notched base dovetailed to the rear of the slide.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered brown plastic panels. The panels show little to no signs of wear with only light handling marks. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Blue frame, parkerized slide.
Finish Originality: It is likely that the finish is original to each of the parts.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 70% of its metal finish. The slide has thinning finish at all edges, scattered wear on the top, and scattered light marks. The frame has a few scattered light marks and thinning finish at some edges and on the frontstrap. The checkered trigger, the wide spur hammer and the grip safety show light thinning and operational wear. The mainspring housing is mostly worn to white. The grip screws are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in about Good-Very Good condition as customized.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide to frame fit is quite tight. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with one 7-round Check-Mate Industries magazine. The magazine has operational wear on the body, intact feed lips and a strong spring, in about Very Good overall condition.

This might make a good first 1911 to customize and learn what you like before you drop a bunch of money on your own custom build, or it might serve as a slide donor to an Ithaca that needs a new one. It would also make a good home defense or carry pistol. Please see our photos and good luck!

Essex Arms 1911 Serial Numbers 45 Acp

Senior Member Location: Northern Nevada | I will disagree with most of what dfariswheel said.. Essex has been making frames for decades and it's true they were one of the first makers of cast frames. Then, and to a much lesser degree even now, you will see some minor flaws in the casting process, but I've never seen it in an area that was anything but cosmetic. I have built countless of M-1911's with Essex frames and I've never had a problem with them in ANY way. Back in the late '70's and early '80's, Essex was one of the only makers of M1911 frams worth working with. While pin holes being out of spec was the most common problem with other makers, Essex tended to get it right most of the time. Remember, back then 'spec' was a vague term and no one could agree on who's spec. These days, Essex benefits from the same CNC technology that everyone else uses. Essex frames are never real pretty, but they're good functional frames and I'll use one any time. Now- Specific to your gun, and here's where dfariswheel and I agree. That's a lot to spend on a non OEM M1911. In essence, it's a parts gun and although it may be a good or even excellent gun, it has absolutely no collectors value whatsoever. At that price range, you can get a brand new Mil-Spec Springfield, or shave $100.00 and you can get a Rock Island gun. |
